The edition of the Chicago IP Colloquium was hosted by Chicago-Kent today, April 7, in Room 305.  The presenter was Professor Lisa Ramsey, of the University of San Diego School of Law.  Professor Ramsey discussed her paper, Free Speech and International Obligations to Protect Trademarks.

New Record for International Trademark Registrations in 2008 but Signs of Slowdown at Year End

International trademark activity remained robust overall in 2008 with WIPO receiving a record 42,075 applications under the 84-member Madrid system for the international registration of trademarks (“the Madrid system”), representing a 5.3% rate of growth.

The dispute between Hisense Corporation and German Bosch-Siemens Corporation over the "HiSense" trademark is becoming increasingly furious and the two firms will confront each other at a German court on Apr.14. Many scholars from the intellectual property circle and officials with the Ministry of Commerce and other departments concerned, inBeijing on Feb. 24, held the "Symposium on safeguarding the legal rights of Chinese trademarks overseas".

Celia Cruz Estate Wins Domain Battle

Celia Cruz may have been known as the Queen of Salsa, but when it came to the Web, she had no domain. For the past decade, a Cayman Island-based corporation has held control over the celiacruz.com Web domain. But now, the name will revert to the late salsa star's estate, per a ruling from the Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center.

INTA lauds state for new law

Cooperation with the Brazilian IP office

The project, in which OHIM will provide advisory services related to technical issues, follows an earlier visit in June 2008 when the Brazilian IP Office requested OHIM's assistance in the event that Brazil decides to join the Madrid Protocol in the near future.

Bridgestone Succesfully protects brand and trademark rights

Bridgestone Cooperation (“Bridgestone”) announced the successful results of a trademark infringement complaint against Chinese manufacturers that attempted to infringe on the goodwill established by Bridgestone intellectual property. Bridgestone has been successful in causing certain businesses to cease the use of two similar sounding names, “Rockstone” and “Bridgesteel”.
